The data center specialist LCL Data Centers will release 120 million euros for infrastructure investments over the next two years. The data center company’s focus is on expansions (100 million euros) and sustainability (20 million euros). LCL is investing in expansion projects in Aalst and Diegem.

According to the press release, LCL wants to use the investments to become an even larger Belgian-European and sustainable data center network. ā€œIn order to remain the reference in the Belgian data center sector, it is important to continue to expand our existing data centers and equip them with sustainable innovations,ā€ explains Laurens van Reijen, Managing Director of LCL Data Centers. ā€œThis is the only way we can receive and serve as many customers as possible. The investments we will make will be a step forward for our company and for our existing and future customers. ā€œ

Expansion plans in Aalst and Diegem

LCL is investing 100 million euros in the expansion of two of its data centers in Aalst (LCL Brussels-West) and Diegem (LCL Brussels-North). Due to annual growth of ten percent, the two data centers are now on the short side. The company has already laid the foundation for expansion (2,367 m² of additional data room) of the existing data center in Aalst. Expansion work will take place in Diegem from December 2023 to October 2025. It is a 4-story building (5 floors in total). The additional 24 MW grid connection is already under construction and has a data room of 4,000 m².

In terms of sustainability, LCL invests primarily in renewable energy, improving its Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and reducing its CO2 emissions2-Footprint. For example, the company will install solar panels on the facade in Diegem. Additionally, LCL aims to reduce PUE across all of its data centers to 1.3 by 2030. Currently only Aalst has a PUE that is below 1.3. For this purpose, LCL is investing, among other things, in more energy-efficient cooling systems. The data center specialist wants the CO2Reduce emissions, including by installing improved leak detection in refrigeration systems, using the renewable fuel HVO100 for all emergency generators and further electrifying the fleet.
