Samsung Electronics, one of the pioneers of the technology industry, recently announced that it will step into 6G technology. The company conducted extensive testing in the 12.7 GHz-13.25 GHz frequency range near Plano, Texas. This strategic move aims to leverage the potential of next-generation cellular devices that provide unprecedented levels of wireless communications.
To make this initiative possible, Samsung Electronics applied for a radio frequency license from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). A prototype base station along with 32 mobile radios will be used in the proposed tests. Samsung has made clear in its FCC filings that it considers the 12.7 GHz-13.25 GHz band to be critical for 6G technology.
Initial results from these tests show a significant increase in spectrum demand, driven primarily by 6G applications such as Extended Reality (XR), holographic communications, and shared communications and sensing. Additionally, the new technology promises to surpass 5G in several aspects, including peak data speeds, latency, traffic density, connection density, mobility, spectrum efficiency, and positioning capabilities.
This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into 6G research. The company laid the foundation for 6G work by applying for a radio frequency license covering a 500-meter radius in Texas in 2021. Later, in November of the same year, Samsung Electronics started testing the 6G project.
Samsung Electronics had previously outlined its vision for 6G technology in a whitepaper published in July 2020. Their goal is clear: to bring a new, super-connected experience to every aspect of life. According to estimates, 6G communications could be commercially available around 2030. With these exciting developments, Samsung Electronics is at the forefront of shaping the future of wireless communications and ushering in a new era of technological innovation.
