Hamas releases two elderly women captured in Israel

The Islamist Resistance Movement (Hamas) released two more hostages this Monday, two elderly Israelis, bringing to four the number of prisoners released by the Islamist group since the October 7 attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed his release Yocheved Lifshitz and Nurit Cooper. “They will go to a hospital specially prepared for them in Israel, where they will be reunited with their families,” the Israeli government emphasized.

The statement thanked Egypt “for its assistance” and the International Committee of the Red Cross “for its important role in saving lives.” He also emphasizes that the Israeli military also played a role in the liberation.

Israeli TV channel 12 reported that these were two women aged 79 and 85 years. He also explained that they were abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz and stressed that their husbands are still being held in Gaza.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (ICRC) confirmed “the release of two more hostages” through the Rafah crossing. “They were removed from the Gaza Strip this afternoon,” the ICRC wrote on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Our work as neutral mediators between warring parties makes this work possible. “We are ready to visit the remaining hostages and facilitate their release in the future,” an ICRC spokesman said. “We hope they will be reunited with their loved ones soon,” he added.

Egyptian media later published images of one of the women being carried on a stretcher to two ambulances at the Rafah checkpoint. Media such as independent television Al-Kahera stressed that the liberation is “the culmination of Egypt’s efforts.”

Israeli authorities have confirmed that Hamas took 222 hostages during its militia’s Oct. 7 incursion into Israel.
