Nvidia would develop an ARM-based chip tailored for Windows computers. The manufacturer wants to support Windows on Arm and put Intel in its place.

Nvidia builds an Arm-based CPU tailored for computers. The chip is therefore not intended for the data center and must be able to run Windows. Reuters knows this.

Nvidia has experience with ARM and has even developed a CPU around the ARM architecture: Grace. However, Grace is intended for the data center and is intended to support AI workloads accelerated by Nvidia’s GPUs. The CPU is not a direct competitor to desktop and laptop chips like Intel Core and AMD Ryzen.

It must be this new chip. The details are still unknown, but systems with the ARM chip could come onto the market as early as 2025. Not surprisingly, Nvidia is collaborating on the design with Arm, which it previously tried to acquire.

Windows on ARM

Microsoft will be happy with Nvidia’s efforts. After all, the Windows builder has been trying unsuccessfully to make ARM Windows laptops a thing for several years. Currently only Qualcomm makes ARM chips for PCs, but they continue to disappoint. Microsoft itself has also released devices with derivatives of these chips (in the Surface series), and that didn’t impress us either.

Nvidia’s ARM chips could shake up the landscape if they are powerful enough. Apple is achieving great success with its self-developed ARM chips and showing that there is a future without x86. In contrast to Microsoft, however, Apple has put all its weight behind the transition to the new architecture and has successfully tried to get developers on board. This is important because software built for x86 will not easily run on ARM.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has only half-heartedly embraced ARM and is somewhat strict about the architecture even with its own products. The question remains whether an ARM-based entry from Nvidia can solve this critical problem.

In any case, not much is set in stone yet. Reuters seems to know that AMD is also considering ARM chips. After the success of the architecture in servers and at Apple, there appears to be some progress in ARM and Windows.
