AMD is said to be gradually gaining momentum with sales of its AI chips and FPGAs. Rumor has it that Oracle will adopt the Instinct MI300X and IBM is eager to get chips from the former Xilinx.

Oracle wants to offer instances in its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with the AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators. The MI300X is a direct competitor to the Nvidia Hopper H100 and has 192 GB of HBM3 memory on board. Do not confuse the chip with its brother: the Instinct MI300A APU, which has additional Zen computing cores on board. Oracle opts for the more classic accelerator.

The deal between AMD and Oracle is good news for the former. Finally, compared to Nvidia, AMD has failed to truly benefit from the rise of AI. An agreement with the fast-growing OCI is a step in the right direction. Please note: The information comes from rumors.

IBM follows suit

The same rumors say that IBM is making the move to AMD. However, IBM is not looking for the finished accelerator, but rather has its sights set on NeuReality’s NR1 AI chip, which is partly made from FPGA parts that AMD developed as part of its previous acquisition of Xilinx.
