NVIDIA and AMD enter the race manufacture of ARM chips for personal computers. According to Reuters, it will run on Windows operating systems and arrive in 2025.

It was a given… Apple’s success in hardware transition has not left anyone indifferent, and the move from x86 architecture to ARM in Macs is an example that other vendors want to follow. And there will be consequences. In fact, this month Qualcomm announced ambitious plans for the Snapdragon X Series platform.

As for Intel, the big dominator of the market with its x86 processors for 30 years, it saw the wolf’s ears a long time ago. And it’s not just about someone joining AMD to compete in x86, it’s about that the industry may turn in favor of a different architecture.

Intel is aware of this, and although it has not yet started making ARM chips, it will produce them for third parties, acting as a foundry under the IDM 2.0 program, which will represent one of the biggest changes in business (and cultural) strategy in Intel’s history for the first time produced x86, ARM, and RISC-V chips for third-party manufacturers.

More ARM chips for PCs

AMD is and will be Intel’s competition on any architecture but ARM big enemy will be NVIDIA. The company is at the cutting edge of graphics technology and has already taken a big bite out of Intel in servers and data centers with its accelerators. His market valuation skyrocketed until he joined the elite trillion dollar club and was willing to invest a multi-million dollar sum just to buy ARM Inc.

With all the major players, from Google to Microsoft, looking to incorporate more AI into hardware, NVIDIA’s expertise in this area could be a big draw for all PC retailers. The green giant could use its decades of GPU manufacturing experience to build its ARM chips, especially given the fact that generative AI applications are particularly heavy on graphics engines.

Missing software

The other part of the equation is software, and here Microsoft has a responsibility to make us forget the previous fiasco Windows on ARM. We said it in the presentation of Snapdragon even with the huge potential of NVIDIA when it comes to creating ARM chips.

In any case, take note, dear reader: Big changes are coming to computing and Intel’s x86 dominance may be coming to an end. Apple’s example is clear and NVIDIA will be a very tough contender.
