The European Union cannot agree on several points of the AI law. There is therefore a real chance that the long-awaited law will not be passed this year.
On Tuesday, October 31st, a new meeting on the famous AI law will take place within the European Union. This meeting is crucial, otherwise the next meeting will be in December and it will be difficult to pass the law this year. The Reuters news agency spoke to four knowledgeable sources and said several points were still on the table.
Eternal discussion
The possible final law has already been discussed three times between member states and the European Parliament. So number four is for Tuesday. A meeting on models such as ChatGPT is also planned for Monday. The sudden explosive growth of the OpenAI model is certainly responsible for further discussions about the law.
According to reports, current EU President Spain wants to speed things up with compromises. The Iberian member state would like to finalize the law this year.
According to Reuters, Spain wants to crack down on popular models with more than 45 million users, but other member states believe smaller platforms can pose just as big a risk. In addition, many top European companies have already expressed concerns about the impact the law could have on their position vis-à-vis competitors outside the Union.
Long term work
If there is no agreement on Tuesday, the meeting in December should bring salvation. If this fails, the talks will be postponed until early next year. However, since the focus is on the European elections in June, these talks could also be delayed.
The law has been in the works for more than two years, since the first text in 2021. There has already been more than one crucial session this year, but for now there is no white smoke. Given the rapid development of AI, it may well be that the EU is not immediately ready for this issue.
