The Chinese government confirmed on Tuesday dismissal of Defense Minister Li Shangfufollowing speculation in recent months as a result of his complete disappearance from public lifesince his last appearance dates back to August 29, when he gave a speech in Beijing.

Lee, who has headed the Defense Department since March, is now second senior official to be fired this yearafter Foreign Minister Qin Gang, in an equally confusing move. In both cases, Beijing avoided explaining, and in fact, confirmation of Li’s departure was made on state television, Bloomberg reported.

The US government has already suggested that Lee investigated by Chinese authorities and that, therefore, he will not return to the position he holds today, according to sources consulted Financial Times. Also Washington Post reported that the Minister of Defense was questioned in September.
