Japanese company Mitsubishi Motors, one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers, producing more than 1.6 million cars, trucks and commercial cars annually, announced that it is withdrawing from the Chinese market and closing its only factory in the PRC.

This was reported by Kyodo, according to Ukrinform’s report.

The Japanese automaker stopped production in China in March due to its inability to compete with local electric vehicle brands and is currently selling the cars in its warehouses.

In China, the Mitsubishi company produced mainly gasoline-powered cars at a facility in Hunan province in partnership with the Guangzhou Automobile Group. However, in the first eight months, sales of such cars decreased by 47.6% compared to the previous year, falling to 12,497 units.

At the same time, the Japanese automaker announced plans to invest up to 200 million euros in Renault SA’s electric car manufacturing company to accelerate the development of zero-emission cars.

Previously, in July, Nissan Motor, Mitsubishi’s partner in the triple alliance with Renault, announced that it would invest 600 million euros in the Renault organization.

This means the three partners will join forces to launch a new electric vehicle company called Ampere, in which Mitsubishi has not previously shown interest.

Mitsubishi said it will expand its battery-powered vehicle lineup through the initiative and plans to sell Ampere electric vehicles under its own brand in the European market.

Mitsubishi is not the only company affected by the sales decline in the Chinese market. Nissan’s January-August sales fell 26.3%, Honda Motor’s sales fell 24.0%, and Toyota Motor’s sales fell 5.1%.

As reported by Ukrinform, Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors announced in September that it was considering the possibility of stopping car production in China due to falling sales to China amid the rapid transition to electric vehicles in the PRC.
