Scientists from Japan’s National Institute of Quantum Science and Technology announced that they managed to create a “plasma” that plays a key role in nuclear fusion reactions.

This was reported by NHK, according to Ukrinform’s report.

According to scientists, they managed to create “plasma” at the JT-60SA large-scale nuclear fusion facility in Ibaraki Prefecture. The cost of the technology complex, jointly built by Japan and the European Union, is approximately 435 million dollars.

For nuclear fusion to occur, the “plasma” must reach a temperature of over 100 million degrees Celsius and the nuclei must collide at a speed of 1000 kilometers per second. Japanese scientists state that they can currently create a “plasma” temperature of 10 million degrees.

The institute aims to obtain the technology necessary to maintain a “plasma” at 100 million degrees Celsius for 100 seconds within five years.

Nuclear fusion occurs in the core of the Sun. Its artificial creation could become a next-generation energy source that does not cause carbon dioxide emissions and high levels of radioactive waste.

As Ukrinform reports, American scientists from the National Ignition Facility of the US Department of Energy’s Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, have achieved a successful nuclear fusion reaction for the first time, leading to a net increase in energy.
