Russian cyberattacks are becoming more coordinated and sophisticated, State Department says

Russian cyber attacks are becoming an increasingly sophisticated and everyday phenomenon aimed at destroying vital infrastructure during wartime.

This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Anton Demyokhin in an interview with Bloomberg, Ukrinform reported.

According to the deputy minister for digital development, digital transformation and digitization, hackers continue to attack government agencies, security services and commercial enterprises, including financial institutions, with the aim of disrupting the provision of services and obtaining personal data. Although Ukraine was able to largely contain the attempts, Demyokhin emphasized that they were effective in that the state went to great lengths to counter the hackers.

“In this sense, yes, they are taking away our time, attention and resources,” the diplomat said, adding that events are becoming more coordinated: Many hackers in different locations are attacking different parts of the same infrastructure at the same time.

Demyokhin explained that other attackers left dormant viruses in information systems that were activated after the start of the attack operation.

“When you put it all together, you realize this is a new level of sophistication,” the State Department deputy chief said.

He stated that during his recent trip to Southeast Asia, he held bilateral meetings with US Deputy National Security Advisor Ann Neuberger and discussed threat intelligence and cyber security technology.

As Ukrinform reported, in early October, the United States and Denmark announced a partnership to reduce vulnerability and strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure to cyber threats, which will be implemented through the USAID project “Cyber Security of Ukraine’s Critical Infrastructure.” “
