A total of nine manufacturers have committed to building PCs around the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.
Windows on ARM is a project that Microsoft has wanted to bring to market for some time, but the project received little traction. So far, because with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and the promise that the chip is faster than Apple or Intel, there is more interest.
So far, eight PC manufacturers have already committed: Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft (Surface), Samsung and Xiaomi. There’s also a ninth name on the list, Honor, a phone maker looking to enter the PC market with the new Qualcomm chip. It is unclear whether the brand will also bring its device(s) to the European market.
The fact that there is so much interest in the new chip is good news for Qualcomm and for Microsoft, which wants to make Windows on ARM a success. Three brands (HP, Lenovo and Microsoft) are the only ones that have already committed to supporting Snapdragon ARM chips in future generations. Samsung says the first laptops won’t appear until mid-2025. The rest are not showing their cards yet.
Traditionally, the latest PC models from most brands are announced at the CES in Las Vegas in early January. There’s a good chance we’ll catch a glimpse of the very first devices there.
