A little over two months after Bernardo Arévalo de Leon elected President of GuatemalaHaving taken office, the country is facing a crisis of governance, and experts say uncertainty will remain constant until Community service (Prosecutor’s Office), continue trying to overturn the results of the vote.

In October, Guatemalans were outraged and rejected by the Attorney General and the head of the Ministry of State (MP). Consuelo Porrasculminated with the blocking of more than 100 roads throughout the territory, as well as mass demonstrations demanding his resignation for interfering in the electoral process.

“Prosecutor Porras is risking her future because she has committed serious crimes, including acts that violate the Constitution, and she knows that If you don’t reach your goals, will go to jail’explains EFE political scientist Ricardo Saenz de Tejada.

According to the expert, Guatemala is immersed in “uncertainty” as those trying to disrupt the election results “assess whether they have the conditions to prevail and whether various players, including Supreme Electoral Tribunal and Supreme Courtas well as the ability to suppress protesters.”

Under this risk scenario, the population awaits Jan. 14, when Arévalo de Leon takes office as president for a four-year term after defeating traditional Guatemalan politics in elections this year.

Persons recognized as conspirators

In addition to Porras, prosecutors Rafael Curruches and Cynthia Monteroso were noted by the population and Arevalo de Leon as “conspirators who are trying to manipulate power at their discretion to prevent the inauguration of a new president. The criminal judge joins them Fredy Orellana.

Saenz de Tejada warns that prosecutors are not alone and “received the support of President Alejandro Giammattei.and some corruption structures that include government suppliers and, to a lesser extent, “certain business groups.”

However, according to the expert, the vast majority of the Guatemalan business elite understands that “preventing Arevalo de Leon from taking office would mean a transition to a closed dictatorship, which would affect their economic interests due to the loss of the rule of law, as well as the protests that this fact will call.”

In the midst of mass demonstrations demanding Porras’s resignation, Giammattei’s government and Congress this week decided increase the budget of the State Ministry by $510 million by 2024a situation which, according to analysts and opposition MPs, was seen as “inevitable political support” for the MP.

Citizen pressure

The prosecutor’s office broke the patience of the population on September 30, confiscating boxes with votes in Supreme Electoral Tribunalin a raid that was widely criticized locally and internationally because local law does not allow such a seizure.

That is why, from October 2 to October 21, thousands of Guatemalans demonstrated against Porras, organized by indigenous communities, which paralyzed the country for several days.

Indigenous authorities indicated that blockades and demonstrations will not stop for believing that the prosecutor’s intentions constitute a “danger to democracy.”

The mass demonstrations against Porras are “unprecedented in their duration,” but this is not the first time that indigenous peoples have “taken center stage and burst onto the political scene,” Saenz de Tejada recalls.

According to experts, everything indicates that Guatemala will end the year with a test of strength between the population and a group of officials who are seeking to prevent the capture of Arevalo de Leon or at least weaken him politically by including him in criminal proceedings.
