Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang died of a heart attack on Friday at the age of 68, just 10 months after leaving the post he held for a decade.
Once considered a top contender for leadership of the Communist Party, Li has been sidelined in recent years by President Xi Jinping, who has consolidated his power and steered the world’s second-largest economy in a more statist direction.
The Peking University-educated economist was seen as a proponent of a more liberal market economy but has had to bow to Xi Jinping’s preference for greater government control.
“Comrade Li Keqiang, who had been vacationing in Shanghai in recent days, suffered a sudden heart attack on October 26 and, after all attempts to resuscitate him, died in Shanghai ten minutes after midnight on October 27,” state broadcaster CCTV reported. Li served as prime minister and chief of staff to Xi Jinping for ten years until he resigned in March.
