UN Secretary-General António Guterres has established an expert group to make recommendations on the use of artificial intelligence.

This is stated in the United Nations’ statement, Ukrinform reports.

“The past year has seen tremendous advancements in the capabilities and use of artificial intelligence with chatbots, voice cloning, image generators, video applications and more. Thanks to one such application, I had the surreal experience of being able to hold a conversation. Guterres said, “Even though I couldn’t speak Chinese, I spoke perfect Chinese and his lip movements matched exactly what I said. “This is just one example of the incredible possibilities and potential pitfalls of artificial intelligence,” he said.

He also noted that in our age, artificial intelligence can contribute to the extraordinary progress of humanity. In particular, AI can expand the scope of work of governments, civil society and the UN, from predicting and resolving crisis situations to the implementation of health and education services.

The UN Secretary-General asked the Advisory Board to prepare recommendations on the use of artificial intelligence by the end of the year, identifying the risks it carries and the opportunities created by this technology.

“Without resorting to many doomsday scenarios, it is already clear that the malicious use of AI can undermine trust in institutions, weaken social cohesion, and threaten democracy itself. For all these reasons, I have called for a global, multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder. Guterres said: “Discussions about the benefit of all humanity have been maximized and the associated risks minimized,” he said.

It is stated that the recommendations of the Advisory Board will be used in preparation for the Future Summit to be held in September next year, that is, for negotiations around the proposed Global Digital Compact. In particular, the organization will consult the UN Scientific Advisory Council on how the benefits of artificial intelligence can be harnessed to accelerate progress for the benefit of all.

Guterres emphasized that the newly established High-Level Advisory Body is gender-balanced, geographically diverse and multi-generational. Members have deep experience in government, business, the technology community, civil society, and academia. They have a wide range of views regarding their field of activity.

As reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that measures should be developed to protect against risks associated with the development of artificial intelligence at the global level.
