In China, a super-large container ship with a capacity of approximately 24,200 twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) was launched in the city of Nantong in the eastern province of Jiangsu.
This was reported by CGTN, according to the report of Ukrinform.
The ship is 400 meters long, four football fields long, 61.3 meters wide and 33.2 meters high, with a maximum container stacking layer equivalent to the height of a 22-storey building. Thanks to these features, it can carry up to 24,188 standard containers (TEU – the traditional unit of measurement of the capacity of freight vehicles, corresponding to the number of standard twenty-foot containers).
The new container ship has been called the “fortress in the sea” because it can carry the heaviest containers and has an overall cargo carrying capacity of up to 228,000 tons.
This is the fourth ship in a series of six super-large container ships equipped with advanced safety systems, environmental protection and energy-saving technologies by Nantong COSCO Khi Ship Engineering, a state-of-the-art shipyard in Nantong. This enables the construction of super-large container ships with advanced intelligent control systems and complying with stringent environmental requirements.
MSC Irina, the world’s largest mega-container ship built in China, made its maiden commercial voyage from the container terminal in the eastern Chinese port of Qingdao, Ukrinform reported.
