The company Boston Dynamics trained the robot Spot to guide its laboratory and give tours on behalf of various characters; For this, an artificial intelligence ChatGPT-based chatbot was connected to the machine.
Speakers, a microphone and the ChatGPT API were connected to the robot-dog Spot, making him an interesting interlocutor. To further revive the image of the machine, the developers added a robotic manipulator instead of the mouth, on which a small head and a pair of plastic eyes are fixed. As a sample tour, the developers wrote basic scripts for each room in the lab; for example, a robot that shows visitors the charging station.
Spot was also taught to take photos of locations and answer questions about what he saw. Eventually he is offered tours on behalf of various characters: an English tour guide from Shakespeare’s time, a young girl, and the sarcastic Josh (Josh).
Spot complimented people, made up poems on the spot, and successfully answered questions that weren’t even in the script: When asked to show his parents, he took a visitor to the earlier generation of Spots on display. He was not a failure: he sometimes said things that did not correspond to the truth; and when he ignored his interlocutor’s answer, he continued his story and only then reacted.
