The U.S. Navy needs to 3D print more parts to build three submarines a year, the head of the program said.
Adaptive production has become necessary to meet construction schedules and subsequently support the operation of new submarines, said Rear Adm. Jonathan Rucker, who oversees the U.S. Navy’s attack submarine production program.
“We absolutely need adaptive manufacturing,” Rucker told lawmakers at a House Armed Services Subcommittee hearing.
“If you look at the components of the ships – forgings, castings, fittings, valves, fasteners – we cannot meet the demand to support the construction of the submarines we need and at the same time support them. Let’s provide service without moving to adaptive production,” he said.
Rucker added that the first 3D printed parts have begun to be installed.
As reported by Ukrinform, in September Ukraine received industrial-grade 3D printers from the United States that can print spare parts for equipment on the battlefield.
