BMW and Apple are working on the wireless charging problem

With the arrival of the iPhone 15 Pro on the market, Apple ran into two problems, we understand that they were unexpected and to which engineering resources had to be devoted: One, fortunately already solved, was overheating of the device. In that case, and I said it at the time, Apple’s response was exactly what was expected, because as soon as the problem was identified, they immediately started working on it and within days the problem was solved. thanks to iOS update. And this, as they initially stated, was not really a concern, as this excessive temperature did not compromise the safety of the device.

However, the second problem seems to be more complicated, to the extent that although users started reporting it practically at the same time as the iPhone Pro overheating, it is not because it has not yet arrived in this case One solution is that Apple has not even officially acknowledged given problem. And the problem is, as we told you at the beginning of this almost finished month of October, that with the wireless charger that some vehicles of the German brand BMW have you can turn off your phone’s NFC connection.

As I recommended back then when this issue became public, I again insist on the first and obvious recommendation in this regard: If you have a BMW, do not use its wireless charger to charge the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max. And there are those who might think that this recommendation only applies to a very small minority, but at the moment we have to remember that the sales figures for 2021 put BMW in the position of the leader of the premium segment in Spain and the market share in our 27.5% , according to the company’s own data, although this last point refers to the aggregate of all the group’s brands.

Be that as it may, BMW confirmed the receipt of the problem at the beginning of the month, as you can see in a tweet about this paragraph, but the people of Cupertino are silent for now. However, and confirming what BMW UK said weeks ago in this report, Apple is already working on an update to fix the iPhone 15 Pro’s problem with BMW wireless chargersa problem that also seems to affect another fairly premium model, the Toyota Supra.

According to sources accessed by The Verge, Apple says in an internal memo to tech services that the charger issue will be fixed with a software update later this year. It also mentions that only a “small number” of chargers are affected, and that the malfunction they’re causing in the NFC chip is temporary, although at the time it appeared Apple was replacing the affected units. Obviously they accompany this with a recommendation not to use the charger until the problem is resolved.

Talking about NFC connection problems may sound a bit abstract, but the truth is that this function plays an important role for many iPhone users today. The clearest example is Apple Pay, a mobile payment system that depends on it, but also other features such as electronic tickets and digital locks, to name just a few examples. So it’s reassuring to know that they’re actually already working on it, although it’s crucial that they give it the highest priority.
