Canadian federal government employees have been banned from using Russian anti-virus software Kaspersky and Chinese app WeChat on their work mobile devices.
This was announced by Anita Anand, President of the Treasury Board of Canada, Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“Based on a cybersecurity risk assessment, we are prohibiting access to these applications from government mobile devices. “The Canadian government is constantly working to secure information systems and networks to ensure the protection of government information,” he said.
Anand emphasized that the government “will continue to constantly monitor potential cyber threats and take immediate action when necessary.”
The Treasury Board of Canada said WeChat and Kaspersky apps “put privacy and security at unacceptable risk.” “On mobile devices, WeChat and Kaspersky’s data collection methods provide significant access to device content,” the agency said.
It also states that “there is no evidence that government information has been compromised.”
As reported by Ukrinform, Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security said it sees a “significant risk” of IT attacks from Russia for users of Kaspersky anti-virus software.
In response, the US Federal Communications Commission included “Kaspersky Laboratory” in the list of companies that threaten the country’s national security.
