Microsoft announced before the summer that RAR support would be available for Windows 11. The major Windows 11 update was released on September 26th, but RAR files could not be opened yet. Now Microsoft has released a new update, KB5031455, which adds support for RAR and 7-Zip.
Other file types now supported include .rar, .tar, .tar.bz2, .tar.zst, .tar.xz, .tgz, .tzst and .txz.
It’s crazy that it took Microsoft so long to add RAR support, especially since ZIP support has been in the operating system since Windows ME. Now you no longer have to install WinRAR and click away the annoying message every time you exceed the 30-day trial period.
