A new AI chatbot that can help users evaluate whether a job application is worth their time is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 and began rolling out to some premium account users on Wednesday.

Users of the new chatbot can ask “Am I suitable for this job?” when evaluating a job. They can use this by choosing one of various questions such as. and “How can I best present myself for this job?” The first asks the tool to analyze the user’s LinkedIn profile and experience and provide a response such as “Your profile indicates that you have extensive marketing and event planning experience relevant to this position.”

The chatbot will also point out potential gaps in the user experience that could harm the user when applying for a job.

“The quality of the answers needs to be really high because the stakes are high here, so we don’t take it lightly,” said Gyanda Sachdeva, LinkedIn’s vice president of product management.

The user can also ask who works at the company, and then the chatbot can send them various employee profiles (potentially second- or third-degree connections), letting them know that the user is looking for a job at that company. The message itself can also be created using generative AI.

In the past, many cases of the use of AI in recruitment or job search have been criticized for being biased against certain segments of the population. One example of this was Amazon’s use of a hiring system that reportedly downgraded resumes that contained the word “woman” or mentioned women’s colleges. A separate study by Harvard Business Review highlighted bias against black candidates in an analysis of interviewer recommendations provided by hiring boards.

The launch of the new chatbot is in conjunction with LinkedIn’s announcement that the number of users of the platform has exceeded 1 billion. Over the past few months, the company has focused on tools like automated recruiter messages, job descriptions, and AI-powered resume recommendations.
