The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has decided to extend Norway’s ban on Meta’s targeted advertising on Facebook and Instagram to all EU countries and the European Economic Area.

This was reported by Reuters, Ukrinform reported.

“On 27 October, the EDPB adopted an urgent, binding decision to impose a European Economic Area-wide ban on the processing of personal data for targeted advertising purposes,” the statement said. The statement was included.

This means the data regulator in Ireland, where Meta has its European headquarters, must impose a permanent two-week ban on the company’s use of such advertising.

Since August 7, Meta has been fined multiple fines of 1 million kroner ($90,000) in Norway for violating users’ privacy by using their data, such as location or internet searches, for advertising purposes.

Meta now faces a much larger fine, according to Tobias Judin, head of international division at Norwegian data regulator Datatilsynet.

“As it is now a permanent ban, failure to comply with this at EU/EEA level will in itself constitute a breach of the GDPR (EU regulations on the protection of personal data – ed.), Judin said it could apply to up to 4% of global turnover (of the company).

Datatilsynet said in September that it had handed over the penalty to the European regulator because it operated only on Norwegian territory.

Norway is not a member of the EU but is part of the single European market.

As Ukrinform reports, social networks Facebook and Instagram in Norway have been temporarily banned from tracking users’ actions on the Internet for the purpose of targeted advertising.

Meta said that soon the company will offer users in Europe access to Facebook and Instagram without advertising in exchange for a subscription.
