A year after the acquisition of Twitter, the company’s value has fallen by more than half. Of the $44 billion that Elon Musk paid in October 2022, $19 billion is now left.
When Musk finally added Twitter to his empire last October, it was for the princely sum of $44 billion. We now know the platform for short as “X” and fewer letters apparently mean less money. All the new owner’s escapades led to a significant loss in value: the platform is now worth $19 billion. That’s almost 55 percent less.
Since Musk was the authoritarian leader at However, this week a number of employees were rewarded with shares of X at $45 each (according to documents seen by The Verge). From this, Fortune was able to conclude that the platform is only worth 19 billion.
According to The Verge, there are even people who would still consider this optimistic. Fidelity, one of the investors Musk attracted to take over Twitter, estimates that the company had previously lost 65 percent of its value. That would make it 15.4 billion.
Anyone who has followed the development of Twitter and later X will undoubtedly not be surprised by this news. The $44 billion was quite steep anyway, but it is primarily the owner’s actions that did nothing good for the market value.
When he took office, he immediately fired all members of the management team, and not long after, thousands of layoffs followed across all departments, including a number of people who were actually urgently needed. There was the leaked data incident, the payment for the APIs (now partially withdrawn) and of course the rebranding of the world-famous Twitter brand after Musk’s favorite letter X.
These are just a few examples. Add to that the volatility with which Musk has managed and renewed his purchase, on top of his overall image, and you get a cocktail that will produce a serious financial hangover.
