Elon Musk calls artificial intelligence one of the “biggest threats” to humanity

Elon Musk said he sees AI as “one of the biggest threats” to humanity and that the AI Security Summit in the UK is “timely” given the size of the threat. The billionaire said artificial intelligence is an “existential risk” because humans are the first to encounter something “much smarter than us.”

Mr Musk was speaking on the first day of the AI Security Summit at Bletchley Park, which the government uses to hold discussions with world leaders, tech companies and scientists about the risks of AI technology.

Speaking to the PA news agency during the summit, Mr Musk said: “I think artificial intelligence is one of the biggest threats (to humans).

“For the first time, we are faced with a situation where we have something that would be much smarter than the smartest human.

“We are not stronger or faster than other creatures, but we are smarter, and indeed for the first time in human history we are here with something that will be much smarter than us.

“I’m not sure if we can control it, but I think we can try to direct it in a direction that will be good for humanity.

“But I think this is one of the existential risks we face, and potentially the most urgent when you look at the time frame and the pace of progress; the summit is timely and I applaud the prime minister for doing it.”

Mr Musk added that he hoped the two-day summit could be used to build “an international consensus” on understanding AI so that the industry could create a “third-party arbiter” who could “observe what the leading AI companies are”. If they have concerns they should do so and at least sound the alarm.” Source
