Chilean President Gabriel Boric expressed concern to his US counterpart Joe Biden on Thursday about Israel’s “disproportionate response” in the Gaza Stripafter his government recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv for consultations over the offensive against the Palestinian group Hamas.

Biden hosted the young Chilean president in the Oval Room of the White House, where both leaders spoke about the environment, clean energy and ways to strengthen democracy in Latin America, and also touched on issues of geopolitical security.

On Gaza, Borich said he condemned the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which killed some 1,400 people, and called for the release of Israeli hostages, but added that the counter-offensive was crossed borders and violated international law.

“The state’s right to self-defense has limits, and those limits imply respect for the lives of innocent civilians, especially if they are children,” Boric told reporters after the meeting.

“We do not allow ourselves to be forced to choose between one side or the other, we are (for) humanity,” he added.

Biden faces growing pressure abroad and at home over his failure to declare a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, although the White House is now backing a series of pauses in fighting to allow people to leave the Gaza Strip and allow help.

Borich and Biden shared some moments of relaxation at the start of their meeting Thursday, discussing the experience of being elected to office when they were 20 years old.

“The only problem I have with you is that you are too young,” Biden told Borich, who is 37. “It’s not a problem,” Borich replied.

Biden said that the two countries have had bilateral relations for 200 years and that new Alliance for American Economic Prosperity (APEP)whose leaders will meet at the White House on Friday will promote economic prosperity throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Borich said he hopes to strengthen ties with the United States and said there are topics for discussion including the “green transition, migration and economic development.” (Reuters).
