The YouTube platform is strengthening the protection of young people by limiting the re-recommendation of videos on topics that could harm young people.
This was reported by CNN, according to Ukrinform’s report.
YouTube said “content that compares physical features and idealizes certain body types, certain fitness levels or weight, or depicts social aggression in the form of non-contact fighting and bullying” will no longer be recommended to young users.
According to experts, some videos may be harmless when watched once, but can become a problem when watched repeatedly.
The restrictions will first come into force in the USA, and next year in other countries.
The change to YouTube’s teen recommendation system is part of a broader update to the platform’s teen safety efforts; This update also includes reminders to “take a break” from long-term use of the platform and information about sources of crisis.
YouTube also publishes guidelines for parents and teens on how to safely create online content.
In 2021, US lawmakers condemned Instagram and YouTube for promoting accounts among young users containing content depicting extreme weight loss and diets. YouTube changed its eating disorder content policy this year, adding bans on certain types of videos on the subject and allowing other videos to be viewed only by adults.
