Manufacturers get a piece of Google’s pie if they support their Android devices for longer than the minimum two-year term.

The antitrust lawsuit against Google gives us an exclusive look into the inner workings of the company. Last week it was up to CEO Sundar Pichai to defend Google. His statement revealed that Google gives smartphone manufacturers that use the Android operating system a financial incentive to provide their devices with updates over a longer period of time.

If there’s one reason for Android users to envy Apple followers, it’s support. On average, Apple provides its iPhones with updates for at least five years (often much longer), while many Android manufacturers, especially for cheap devices, stop doing so after just two years. These two years are the minimum that Google requires from manufacturers.

The longer the better

Manufacturers that choose to provide updates for longer will receive a larger share of revenue for the Google services used on the devices. In this way, Google wants to offset the costs that manufacturers incur when supporting devices for a longer period of time. This strategy seems to be working, as in recent years we have seen manufacturers effectively expand their support policies.

Samsung, for example, now supports all of its new Galaxy smartphones for five years as standard. Google itself is setting a good example and supporting its new Pixel devices for seven years. The real update champion in the Android ecosystem is Dutch Fairphone, which promises to support its latest model for eight to ten years.

Search monopoly

Pichai’s testimony also discussed the far-reaching tactics that helped Google become the largest search engine. Google did it with Apple a few years ago Offer they can’t refuse to remain the default search engine in Safari. Google’s counterargument is that they became the biggest because they simply developed the best search engine. Ironically, twenty years ago Google was concerned about Microsoft’s “monopolistic practices” of forcing its search features into Windows.
