John Romero, one of the co-founders of id Software and, along with the graphics engine genius John Carmack, the main person responsible for the video game that practically “invented” the first-person shooter genre and was an inspiration to all He later announced the arrival of Sigil II Doom 30th Anniversary.
Neither Romero nor Carmark have any copyright on Doom now, and there are many of us who think this legendary game should have been released for free, but that’s part of another story. What we are interested in is their anniversary. On December 10, Romero will join an online chat on his Twitch channel with his partner John Carmack to talk about it and the release that kicks off the little stories of this place. Romero created and released the first Sigil for Doom in 1993 for free as an unofficial fifth episode of the main game. Later, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, it was released by its current owners, Bethesda Softworks, as a free mod for your ports from Doom for consoles and mobile devices. Romero’s development continued where the fourth episode of 1995’s Ultimate Doom left off with 18 new levels. Nine of them are for the single player campaign and the other nine are for the multiplayer deathmatch.
Despite the popularity of its brilliant 2016 reboot and its sequel Eternal, the original Doom still has a massive and dedicated community. from players and modders alike. Romero’s current game development company, Romero Games, is also working on a major Unreal Engine-based first-person shooter project, but details have yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, Sigil II will be available December 10th to celebrate Doom’s anniversary and expand his legend.
