It seems unbelievable, but just over three years have passed since then Both Apple and Google have decided to pull Fortnite from their respective iOS and Android app stores. The reason, as we told you back then, was the provocation (because that was the point) by including two payment options in the game launcher for both platforms, one through the payment systems of both technologies (each one on its own platform, of course) and another, cheaper, direct payment in which those responsible for the platform were left without a commission for purchases in the application. Something we have to remember was forbidden in the terms of the trade.
Although the response from both technology companies occurred on the same day, just a few hours apart, inIt quickly became clear that Apple and Google would not stand together against Epic Games. In fact, on the same day those responsible for Android criticized Apple’s model, although they were obviously also criticizing Epic’s way of doing things, which was only the latest (at the time) in a series of bizarre moves by Tim Sweeney’s part of the business. .
Let’s recall the statement of Google in this regard after it excluded Fortnite from Google Play for Android:
«Android’s open ecosystem allows developers to distribute apps across multiple app stores. For game developers who choose to use the Play Store, we have consistent policies that are fair to developers and keep the store safe for users. Although Fortnite is still available on Android, we can no longer do it on Play because it violates our policies»
Since then, we’ve had plenty of news about the court confrontation between Apple and Epic Games in a legal proceeding that began in the summer of 2021 and is still open today, as Apple appealed the latest (so far) court decision. However, the second major part of this conflict was still ongoing, since then we hear its initial signal A lawsuit between Epic Games as the plaintiff and Google as the defendant began today.
From what has been seen so far, it seems so The argument used by Epic Games partially matches the argument it used in the case against Applealthough in this case there is a very clear difference, which is reflected in Google’s August 2020 statement. So in this case, the strategy involves trying to show that Android is not as open an ecosystem as Google claims, since the company would use various measures to limit development third-party stores on Android.
In this regard, Epic Games describes the installation process from third-party stores as nothing short of a horror, stating that the security messages displayed by the operating system were designed to scare users and discourage them from installing apps from third-party stores. In addition, they also point to the cooperation signed by Google with third parties, so that they are voluntarily maintained exclusively in their app store.
Personally, I don’t find the first argument ridiculous., because by alerting the user to possible risks, they put their safety first. However, Epic Games has more than enough resources to inform its users that these messages are normal and that there is nothing to worry about if they contact the relevant repository. Deleting these messages would be a problem, and a serious one, not just for Google, but for all Android users.
Unlike Apple, Google has always allowed third-party stores on Android, so instead of violating Google Play’s rules and thus forcing your ban to basically make noise, you could create your own store. But of course, in reality, their desire is to stay in the Google store, but to enforce their own terms. Of course, let’s not forget that we’re talking about a man who pillages monopolies while hankering for a one-stop gaming store… his own, of course.
