A number of Surface devices will receive updates from Microsoft for two more years. For some devices, this means a total of up to six years.
Surface devices manufactured after January 1, 2021 will continue to receive driver and firmware updates for two years. Microsoft made these adjustments to the cycle policy for these devices based on alleged user demand.
This extension means that, for example, devices starting in October 2021, like the Surface Pro 8, will receive updates until the same month in 2027. A more recent example, the Surface Laptop Go 3, was launched last month. It will therefore receive the updates until October 2029.
Surface devices from before 2021 will continue to receive updates for at least four years. However, that depends on the model. The Surface Studio 2 dates back to October 2018, but will receive updates until October next year. The Surface Go 2 was released in May 2020 and will receive updates until December next year.
This policy change doesn’t affect the version of Windows on each Surface device. Driver and firmware updates apply to versions of Windows released within the last thirty months. This does not apply to versions older than those supported at the time a particular device was released.
Security and feature updates will continue to be available even after driver and firmware upgrade dates have passed. Some experts now believe that the frequency with which Microsoft releases its Surface devices will decrease.
