Public debate has begun over the type of air transport to be used during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.

The one-month talks aim to obtain the opinions of the citizens of the capital for the final decision of the Ministry of Transport. This was reported by Le Parisien, as reported by Ukrinform.

The French environmental department expressed such a limited view on the project, saying: “This experiment contradicts the objectives of reducing final energy consumption in the transport sector by 16% by 2028.” They state that these vertical take-off and landing aircraft consume approximately 30 times more energy than the subway.

“Unless you consider the average car with an internal combustion engine to be quiet, they (airplanes) cannot be considered quiet, contrary to what is stated in the dossier,” said a resident of the 15th arrondissement of Paris, where noise pollution is high. he got scared.

The experimental project currently under discussion involves the installation of the “Vertiport” barge on the River Seine. It should become the future platform for the landing and take-off of these new types of devices.

Flying machines that resemble large crowned insects have been named Volocity by German startup Volocopter. For the purpose of the experiment, a total of five such routes have been designed, which will use existing air corridors along the Paris ring road and over the River Seine.

However, to start shipping, manufacturer Volocopter still needs to obtain certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and this should not happen until spring 2024. Although this will not be easy, according to the company’s CEO Dirk Hoke, if it is not possible to launch routes to the Olympics, the company will at least want to launch demonstration flights without passengers.

As previously reported, Volocity has been operating flights around Pontoise airport near Paris since last November. Twenty cars flew about 200 km. The German company is also preparing to hire pilots and start training them by the end of the year. They plan to produce approximately fifty such devices per year in the near future. Experts promise that these devices will be able to fly autonomously, that is, without a pilot, by 2030. Paris may be the first city in the world to offer this type of transportation.
