The Flemish Supercomputing Center will house its latest Tier 1 supercomputer at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where space will be made for a new ecological data center.
Vrije Universiteit Brussel will host and manage the Flemish Supercomputer Center’s (VSC) next Tier 1 supercomputer in its new Nexus data center. This Tier 3 data center will be built in the Green Energy Park in Zellik, with sustainability and a focus on renewable energy at the forefront.
It would be the greenest data center in the country, which is good news since supercomputers traditionally use a lot of energy. This new Tier 1 machine will be no different. In any case, the design must be as ecological as possible. So the hardware lasts almost all year round Free air cooling Stay fresh and active cooling only turns on on the hottest days.
For each
The HPC system will be available to researchers from all over Flanders and will therefore not be used exclusively by the VUB. The VSC manages the computing time that researchers receive and allocates it based on individual requests. The supercomputer is intended to contribute to new research and provide new insights.
There are not many details about the machine yet. We already know that the computer represents an investment of twelve million euros and should be operational in 2025. It is unclear what hardware the computer will consist of and what proportion of GPU accelerators will be.
Strategically important
“Supercomputers are of strategic importance for Flanders,” said Jo Brouns, Flemish Minister of Innovation, about the announcement. Thanks to this infrastructure, Flemish researchers, governments and companies can continue to work on the challenges of tomorrow. Complex and time-consuming calculations can be carried out faster and more efficiently, both for climate simulations and for training AI models.
The newest Tier 1 supercomputer in Flanders is from 2021. This system is called Hortense and is located at Ghent University. It has a computing capacity of 3.3 petaflops. This system is also the most powerful in the country, although it is not certified in the top 500. The most powerful Belgian computer in this renowned pinnacle of HPC systems is Lucia, based in Charleroi.
