Travel Lemming reveals the 50 best places to travel in 2024, highlighting “slow travel” destinations and hidden gems being discovered, urging travelers to “fight FOMO” and limit pandemic revenge travel.
Travel Lemming, an online travel guide read by 10 million people a year, today released its list of the 50 best places to travel in 2024. Topping the list is the Mexican state of Yucatan, which is gearing up for a big year in 2024 with the launch of the long-awaited Mayan Train project.
Travel Lemming publishes an annual list to highlight the hidden gems that the editorial team believes are about to emerge in the coming year.
This year’s list has a theme of “slow travel.” The publication argues that with many travelers freed from the “pent-up wanderlust” of the pandemic era, “we believe 2024 is the right time to slow down” because “if travelers continue to travel the world at breakneck speed, we will manage risk of returning to the days of overtourism.
The 2024 list is dominated by off-the-beaten-path destinations and hidden local gems ideal for long trips, including Gizo in the Solomon Islands (No. 2), Stavanger in Norway (No. 3), Phu Quoc in Vietnam (No. 6) and St. John’s in Canada (No. 7).
Several unique domestic destinations also took top spots this year, including Memphis, Tennessee (No. 5), Kodiak, Alaska (No. 8), and Eureka Springs, Arkansas (No. 10).
Nate Hake, CEO of Travel Lemming, commented: “2024 will be the year when travelers choose immersive experiences over busy itineraries. Our list is full of destinations perfect for leisurely travel. For example, the opening of the long-awaited Mayan Train will allow more travelers to discover the magic of the Yucatan, one of my favorite underrated travel destinations in the world.
Michelle Friedman Hirsch, Minister of Tourism of Yucatan, commented: “We are thrilled to be selected as the world’s top destination for 2024 by Travel Lemming. Yucatan is home to 7 magical cities, hundreds of haciendas and cenotes, and a length of 378 kilometers. coastline with tranquil emerald green and turquoise hues, Chichen Itza, one of the wonders of the modern world, and 20 other archaeological sites worth visiting. It is home to vibrant Mayan culture, unusual gastronomy such as cochinita pibil, roast suckling pig, black stuffed dishes, papadzules and much more.
