Vatican accepts trans godfathers and mothers ‘with conditions’

Vatican explained that transsexual May be baptized “like other believers” and serve godfather or godmother this sacrament, but ‘with conditions’in response to doubts about this from the Brazilian bishop.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith published the text signed on October 31 dad Francisco and his prefect, an Argentine cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandezto answer questions about the participation in baptisms and weddings of transsexuals and homosexuals raised by the Bishop of Santo Amaro, Jose Negri.

The answers, as the old Holy Office explains, “repeate to a large extent the fundamental content of what has already been confirmed on this issue in the past” by the Congregation, citing a document on the matter from December 2018.

First of all, the Vatican reacts.

A transsexual who has also undergone hormonal treatment or sex reassignment surgery can be baptized under the same conditions as other believers.

But so far “there are no situations in which there is a risk of a public scandal or disorientation of believers,” he notes and adds.

Children or adolescents with transsexual issues, if they are well prepared and willing, can be baptized.

The Congregation believes that when there is doubt “about the objective moral position” of a person, the Church teaches that “when the sacrament is received without repentance for grave sins, the subject does not receive sanctifying grace, despite receiving its sacramental character.”

The document justifies this position by citing St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Augustine, and recalls that Pope Francis himself defends that baptism “is the door that allows Christ to be established in person” and that the Church “is not a customs house, but a father’s house.” where there is a place for everyone.”

Trans pride flag.

The Brazilian bishop’s second question is whether a transsexual can be a godfather or godmother at baptism.

The document answers.

Under certain conditions, an adult transsexual who has also undergone hormonal treatment or sex reassignment surgery may be allowed to play the role of godfather or godmother.

And he adds:

However, since this is not a right, pastoral prudence requires that it should not be allowed when there is a danger of scandal, mislegitimation or disorientation in the educational sphere of the ecclesial community.

And regarding whether a transsexual can be a witness at a wedding, it is noted that “there is nothing in the current universal canon law that would prohibit a transsexual from being a witness at a marriage.”
