Google announced in a press release that it would be expanding its partnership with Anthropic. The tech giant has already pledged to invest $2 billion in the AI ​​startup and will now also become the company’s preferred cloud partner. Anthropic was already deeply anchored in the Google Cloud: According to the press release, the company built one of the largest Kubernetes clusters. Sour for AWS, which also tried to tempt Anthropic with money.

For those unfamiliar with Anthropic, the company is OpenAI’s biggest competitor, but has not yet achieved the same success as ChatGPT with its chatbot Claude. Anthropic wants to build a new version of the model called Claude Next, which should be up to ten times more powerful. To do this, Anthropic not only needs money, but also the necessary infrastructure to accommodate all of this.

Of course there is also something for Google. Anthropic will move Claude to TPU v5e chips in Google’s data centers, but will also invest in cloud security technology. Anthropic will buy $3 billion from Google Cloud over four years. In other words: the technology giant will recoup its investment twice.

It shouldn’t be surprising that Google is courting Anthropic so explicitly. After all, Microsoft has already implemented OpenAI in its cloud; A collaboration with competitor Anthropic is the best answer to this. The Microsoft-OpenAI tandem has now become a love triangle with Oracle.
