Can’t log in to ChatGPT this morning? You’re far from the only one. The chatbot has been experiencing disruptions since yesterday evening and the technical problems were also confirmed by OpenAI itself. The company first reported the major outage around 9 p.m. in our time zone. This morning, OpenAI confirmed that it was a DDoS attack, a type of attack in which a company’s web servers are overloaded to the point of failure, with the aim of disrupting the victim’s online services.
Suspected perpetrators of the attacks were even identified. The hacker collective Anonymous Sudan claims to be behind the attack on its Telegram channel. The hackers are said to have acted for political motives because they believe that OpenAI is siding with Israel a little too much in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
It remains to be seen whether such claims have any source of truth, but Anonymous Sudan has already proven that it is capable of great things: in June it temporarily shut down Microsoft’s OneDrive and Outlook services. The hackers do not target large American companies in exceptional cases.
OpenAI is working hard on a solution to get ChatGPT fully working again for everyone. The outages affect the chatbot, but also the paid APIs that OpenAI offers developers. The Dall-E image generator was already exhibiting strange behavior on Monday, but the problems have probably been resolved by now.
We will continue to monitor the situation and update this article if new, interesting information comes to light. You can also track new updates about the incident via the OpenAI status page.
