Russian hacker group Sandworm, affiliated with Russian intelligence, was behind a cyberattack that disrupted part of Ukraine’s power grid in late 2022.
This is stated in the report of the American cybersecurity firm and Google subsidiary Mandiant, Ukrinform reports.
In October last year, a powerful wave of Russian missile attacks on Ukraine’s power grid caused power outages in many parts of the country.
A hacker group managed to cause a power outage in one of the unnamed regions of Ukraine. Simultaneously with Russia’s missile attack on the distribution station, Sandworm hackers activated the circuit breakers on the station. They then used malware to delete data from some of the computer servers involved in an attempt to eliminate traces of the attack.
“This attack represents the latest development in Russia’s cyber-physical attack capabilities, which have become increasingly prominent since its invasion of Ukraine,” the report said.
The report states that hackers are using new tools to attack not only Ukraine but also other countries.
As Ukrinform reported, hackers suspected of working for Russian foreign intelligence attempted to break into the computers of dozens of diplomats working at embassies in Ukraine using fake BMW ads.
