The eruption of an underwater volcano in the Pacific Ocean caused new island about 1200 km south of Tokyonear Ioto Island, also known as Iwo Jima, according to Japanese media reports last Wednesday.

The discovery is the result of research by a doctor of volcanology and an associate professor at the Institute for Earthquake Research at the University of Tokyo. Fukashi Maenowho on October 30 conducted aerial surveys over Ioto Island in the Ogasawara Archipelago.
