Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon slowed by 22.3% in the 12 months to July, government data showed on Thursday, marking the smallest area devastated in the world’s largest rainforest since 2018.
Some 9,001 square kilometers of jungle were cleared from August 2022 to July this year, according to the National Institute of Space Research (INPE).
The data produced annually by Inpe’s Prodes satellite monitoring program is much more accurate than the Deter alert system, which publishes data weekly.
Destruction in the Amazon worsened under the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro, which weakened environmental agencies and opened the way for an influx of gold miners, loggers and farmers to clear the jungle.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who took office earlier this year, has made rebuilding environmental protections and reducing deforestation one of his government’s priorities. (Reuters).
