Nintendo denies Switch 2 dual-screen rumors

Nintendo has been the subject of intense speculation regarding its next gaming console, called Switch 2. Recent rumors fueled by a patent application suggest that the company may be working on a dual-screen device similar to the iconic 3DS. As described in the patent, this device can potentially be split in half for multiplayer gaming, offering a unique combination of the flexibility of a handheld device and the power of a traditional console game.

However, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa strongly denied these rumors about the dual-screen design. During a private earnings call, he dismissed widespread reports as “false” and distanced the upcoming console from design features of the discontinued 3DS.

Adding to the intrigue, documents related to the FTC’s lawsuit against Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard also claim that Activision Blizzard has access to detailed specifications of the upcoming console. However, Nintendo denied the claim, saying that such information was not shared with Activision Blizzard or any other company.

What has caught the attention of gamers and industry observers is the nature of the patent that Nintendo has filed. Although not every patent leads to a consumer product, the act of filing indicates the potential for implementation in future products.

Official announcements regarding Nintendo Switch 2 are few and far between at the moment, but industry rumors indicate that development kits have been distributed to select partners, with a potential launch expected in the second half of 2024.

The console is said to support NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 technology and potentially offer advanced graphics including ray tracing, distinguishing it from the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Backwards compatibility and advanced machine learning capabilities have also been suggested, but no official confirmation has been given. .
