Microsoft cancels controversial OneDrive change

I’m sure you remember, we told you that two days ago OneDrive for Windows has been updated and which in its latest version contained a novelty that users did not like, and there are many reasons for this. The surprise was that when the user decided to close the app, a survey was automatically displayed, asking the user the reason for closing and displaying a list of possible explanations.

That in itself is somewhat disturbing, but arguably worst of all is, as we told you on Friday, This list did not include the “I don’t want to report this” option. The closest was the “Other” option, which certainly doesn’t have the same meaning or utility. Because of course I completely understand that Microsoft is interested in knowing the reasons why certain users don’t use OneDrive, but I don’t think it’s good enough that they’re trying to impose an obligation to respond.

And yes, I say duty because the survey was not optional, that is, you could not have avoided the responses by conventional means, as in that case the OneDrive client would not have completed closing. Of course there were alternatives such as accessing the Task Manager and killing the process or doing a “Kill” from the console, but these means are beyond the reach of the average non-technical user. This means that it was mandatory for the majority to pass said survey, which understandably pissed off a lot of people.

Fortunately, the pressure seems to have paid off and as we can read in WindowsLatest, Microsoft reverted the change and removed “exit survey” from OneDrive. This is what we can find in the statements received exclusively by the mentioned medium: «Between November 1st and November 8th, a small subset of OneDrive consumer users temporarily received a dialog box when they closed the OneDrive sync client, asking for feedback as to why they chose to close the app. The message was removed after collecting a sufficient sample of user comments. This feedback helps inform our continuous efforts to improve the quality of our products.«.

As I said before, I totally understand that Microsoft wants to collect more feedback its usersand I am aware that it may serve to improve the user experience of its applications and services. However, connecting the closing of the application with participation in the survey seems to me to be an absolute excess and subsequently something that I do not understand and which was given the green light to start. At least they solved it now and of course gained a lot feedbackalthough much of it is not what they expected.
