The rector of the Central American University, Andreu Oliva, condemned the arrests of “innocents” and the “torture” of prisoners as part of the emergency regime imposed by El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to combat organized crime and gangs.

An estimated 191 people have died in state prison custody.

“I would say to our authorities, police and soldiers: it is very good that you want to guarantee the safety of your people, it is your duty, but act fairly, respect the law and do not take innocent people prisoner without evidence. that they have committed any crime, do not give false information, do not use violence or mistreat your people,” said the priest from Barcelona.

Oliva used the occasion to commemorate the military killing of six Jesuits and two of their collaborators in 1989 during the 1980-1992 civil war. Five were Spaniards: Ignacio Ellacuria, Ignacio Martin Baro, Segundo Montes Mozo, Amando Lopez Quintana and Juan Ramon Moreno Pardo.

Oliva also criticized spending on “false propaganda” such as the Miss Universe pageant, which takes place in the country next week.

“I would say to our president: do not look for your own interests, do not allow yourself to be carried away by ambitions and the desire to increase your fame with false propaganda, spending millions of dollars on it, beauty contests that cost millions of dollars. dollars, while there are so many hungry people in their country,” he said.

Last Tuesday, El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly extended for the twentieth time the state of emergency that is the cornerstone of Bukele’s security project and has allowed for the arrest of 73,800 suspected gang members.

However, various human rights organizations have questioned the emergency regime for suppressing constitutional guarantees and allowing arrests without a court order.
