SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD

In recent months, there have been more and more complaints about the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs 4TB and 2TB. The parent company Western Digital has (partially) responded to this, But according to an expert, the fault lies with the manufacturer itself.

There have been many complaints about the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs on social media like Reddit in recent months. These are both 2 TB and 4 TB hard drives. But the answer from the main company WD does not seem to be completely complete.

What is wrong

The main problems cited are data loss and devices that become completely unreadable or to which data can no longer be written. There was even a user who reported issues with two different 2TB drives.

According to unconfirmed rumors, this only affects devices produced after November last year, but such online balloons cannot always be trusted. Western Digital markets the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs as rugged and reliable, with a five-year warranty. These current complaints are therefore not advertising for the company.

Answer from WD

Western Digital has now indicated that it is aware of the problems and a solution is on the way. The company will release a firmware update on its website soon; Users can also contact customer service to request assistance at any time. However, there was no mention of a possible refund, which once again caused online dissatisfaction among customers.

An important “detail” is that WD only talks about firmware updates for the 4TB models. The question now is whether the lack of the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs 2 TB is an oversight or whether it was deliberately omitted.

Design defects

A few firmware updates later, the problems are still not resolved. According to a certain Markus Häfele, the CEO of the Austrian data recovery company Attingo, it is not a software problem at all, but a serious design flaw in the SSDs. The soldering material used forms air bubbles and therefore breaks more easily, the expert explains to FutureZone. This issue cannot be resolved through firmware updates.

Western Digital would not confirm this conclusion. Newer models have a changed design. Häfele sees this as a tacit admission that Western Digital knows what was wrong with SanDisk’s drives.

Unfortunately, customers with a defective SSD apparently don’t have to expect a quick solution. The fact that Western Digital wants to get rid of Sandisk won’t help matters either. From the second half of 2024, SanDisk will have to stand on its own two feet again. An emergency decision that Western Digital made after merging with Xioxia narrowly failed.

Western Digital has incurred the wrath of customers several times in a relatively short period of time. Devices that weren’t updated were summarily banned from My Cloud and hard drive owners received false notifications that their hard drive was broken. Then we haven’t even talked about the cyber attack in May. Add to that the poor financial results and you can see why Western Digital is desperate for fresh momentum.
