OpenAI wants to develop an AI system that is as intelligent as a human. This requires additional financial resources and will hopefully rely on the main sponsor Microsoft.

OpenAI wants to start discussions with Microsoft about new investments. Financial Times writes this. Earlier this year, Microsoft pumped $10 billion into the company, making it its top investor. OpenAI dreams of it Artificial general intelligence to develop, but to make this dream come true, more financial resources are needed.

Smarter than a human

There are different degrees within artificial intelligence. Most of the AI models we know today fall under the heading of “weak AI,” i.e. algorithms that are trained for specific tasks but cannot think beyond their script. For example, Dall-E can draw very well, but don’t ask the program about tomorrow’s weather.

ChatGPT is increasingly moving towards “general artificial intelligence”. At this magical point, an AI system’s intellectual capabilities would be on par with humans. For example, after the latest update, ChatGPT can capture images, analyze data, and perform searches within a single sequence of prompts. That’s still not general intelligence, but OpenAI and other industry players believe it’s no longer a distant future prospect.

The superlative of general intelligence is “superintelligence.” At this level, artificial intelligence would surpass the human brain. Fortunately, this somewhat evil thought is still a long way off.

Wanted: money and data

This side step makes it clear why OpenAI needs more money. ChatGPT currently costs more to maintain than it earns, and creating even larger versions is an expensive proposition. OpenAI is also in talks with other investors to become more independent from Microsoft, but a new check from the main sponsor is always welcome.

Money alone won’t get you where you want to be in the AI industry. Models also require a lot of data. To ensure this, OpenAI last week launched a partner platform where organizations can donate their data.
