Archaeologists in Mexico have found a 1,000-year-old statue of a Mayan warrior in the basement of a temple at Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula.

In the statement made by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), it was stated that the statue depicts a warrior with an open jaw, wearing a snake-shaped helmet and a feathered headdress. According to the description, the statue is 13 inches (33 centimeters) tall and 11 inches (28 centimeters) wide and is in good condition except for a crack. Perhaps the head was once part of a larger statue.

Chichen Itza developed between the ninth and 13th centuries and covers more than 740 acres (300 hectares). In the center of the site, a pyramid known as El Castillo (The Castle) rises 100 feet (30 meters) in height. There are many temples in the area, as well as a large ball field and an astronomical observatory.

The area is a popular tourist destination and INAH has been modifying and building a new train line known as the “Mayan Train” near the site over the past few years, as well as new visitor centers and museums. The statue was found during archaeological work during the construction of the railway.

The statement stated that a large number of other archaeological finds were unearthed during the construction work, including approximately 660 human remains, more than 1 million pottery pieces, the remains of numerous architectural structures and a number of other artifacts.
