Some of the Android users in the car had problems using VPN applications on their mobile phones: Android Auto Didn’t work properly with VPN enabled and in wireless modespecifically the Google One app. The bug has been fixed in the latest versions of the apps, both Android Auto and Google One itself.

Thanks to the successive updates that Google has released to Android Auto, it may seem that the system for vehicles does nothing but add new features, but this is not the case: At the level of interface and appearance it has not changed much for a long time. It’s the exact opposite of what’s going on under the hood, as Google fixes bugs and issues that occur in certain tools and also types of usage. It even resolves conflicts between its own applications, just like Google One.

Considering the characteristics of tunneled connections used in VPNs, where the smartphone connects through a network of servers, Preventing internet companies from knowing private browsing data, mobile devices often cause conflicts when certain wireless services are used to connect to nearby devices; Just like Android Auto. The general solution to avoid this is to apply a rule in the VPN app so that ignore communication between smartphone and car. In the case of Google One, this rule did not work.

As Google notes on its Android Auto support page, this has fixed the issue with certain VPN apps, such as the aforementioned Google One. Communication between car and mobile phone must be correct; both automatically and manually from the app as long as it’s limited to Android Auto.

We check the operation with the VPN applications we have installed on our phones and we experienced no problems with Nord VPN: Android Auto starts correctly and creates no connection problems (and without extra configurations). We had a similar experience on Google One but We need to do an extra step Beyond connecting the mobile phone to the car with VPN active:

  • Scroll down to “View settings”.
  • Click “Allow apps to bypass VPN”.
