This is a change of great importance as WhatsApp consumes major storage space on Android smartphones. What about the voice notes, all those good morning photos that fill the groups every morning, those birthday videos that fill the gallery of every mobile phone: Gigabytes and gigabytes typically uploaded to Google Drive with each WhatsApp backup. Considering the enormous amount of resources this entire space requires, Google has decided to turn off the tap.

So far, WhatsApp backups have not taken up space in the Google account; By default, 15 GB free per user. Starting from December 2023, everything will change: WhatsApp backup will reduce the available storage space on Google Drive.

As announced by Google and WhatsApp, the implementation schedule of the measure is as follows:

  • December 2023. WhatsApp beta will no longer upload your backup copy to Google Drive for free.
  • first half of 2024. Google Drive will extract space from the copy for each user who activates it.

WhatsApp will give each user 30 days notice to account for anything they will lose by backing up the messaging app. In general, a WhatsApp user who talks to their contacts on a daily basis and has several very active groups, The application will take up space that may exceed 10 GB; space that will eventually be deleted from your Google Drive.
