“This planned pause is another step in restoring public trust as we undergo a full security review,” Cruz said in a blog post.
Cruz also said in his blog that Exhibitor, an independent engineering firm previously hired to conduct technical analysis root cause of the October 2 incidentwill expand that investigation to include a “comprehensive review” of its security systems and technologies.
In addition, Cruise will hire an outside safety expert to review the company’s operations and safety culture, according to the blog. This will be in addition to the permanent chief security officer he previously announced.
The measures came after Cruise’s board of directors met Monday in San Francisco, according to people familiar with the meeting. Cruz previously said he hired the law firm Quinn Emanuel to review Cruz’s response to the disaster.
Some investors felt the communications department mishandled Cruz’s explanation of what happened in the Oct. 2 accident, when one of Cruz’s self-driving cars braked, but did not avoid a collision and dragged away a pedestrian who was previously hit by a driver who fled the scene.
Cruz operated an Uber-like service with self-driving vehicles, mostly in San Francisco, but suspended the service after the accident. A blog post on Tuesday showed that the suspension had been extended to vehicles driven by human drivers as a safety measure, affecting about 70 vehicles.
Cruise competes with Alphabet’s Waymo unit and other companies to develop robotic vehicles for large-scale production and deployment. Perfecting the technology will require years of testing in real-world conditions, but the companies have faced resistance from some lawmakers and citizens who fear the vehicles are still untested and pose a safety risk.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said last month it was investigating the safety of cruisers.
In early October, the California Department of Motor Vehicles ordered Cruz’s self-driving cars off the state’s roads, calling them a public hazard and saying the company had “misrepresented” the safety of the technology.
