YouTube will soon require creators to add custom tags when they upload “realistic, rendered, or synthetic content, including using artificial intelligence tools.”

This was reported by CNN, according to Ukrinform’s report.

This applies, for example, to videos that “realistically depict events that never happened” or content that shows someone saying or doing something they didn’t actually do.

“This is especially important when content discusses sensitive topics like elections, current conflicts, and crises in health or politics,” said YouTube vice presidents Jennifer Flannery O’Connor and Emily Moxley.

The ability to mark videos with descriptions will be added when videos are uploaded to YouTube and will go into effect early next year. Special labels will appear in the description bars of videos, but for “certain types of sensitive content” the labels will be placed more prominently above the video. Content created using YouTube’s own generative AI tools will also be flagged.

Creators who do not use the new definition may face sanctions, such as content removal or suspension from YouTube’s partner program that allows content monetization. The platform also stated that synthetic or AI-generated content that violates its community guidelines will be subject to the same restrictions or removal as other videos.

YouTube also announced that it will allow users to request the removal of content created by AI or impersonates a person, including their face or voice, by simply requesting that the video be removed. YouTube says it will consider “a variety of factors,” such as satirical content or the presence of public figures, when deciding whether to accept a user’s request to remove content.

The platform’s music partners will also be able to request the removal of AI-generated music that imitates the voices of certain artists.

These changes to the platform come amid concerns about the rise of artificial intelligence-generated sexually explicit images and other content that manipulates people’s faces and voices.

As Ukriform reports, YouTube is strengthening the protection of young people by limiting the re-recommendation of videos on topics that could harm young people.
